![]() This style of Shaker Table is the most popular and expensive of the original Shaker Tables. The top is made of 150 - 200+ year old pine. The base, the legs, are hand turned hard maple approximately 150 years old, the trestle is the hard wood that we have on hand when your table is built. The feet are made from 150+ year old cherry or maple. This Table is the most difficult to build and the one that has the greatest eye appeal. We consulted and worked with the good people at the Shaker Museum and Library in Old Chatham, NY to obtain information as to how the original Shaker Tables were actually made; books offering how to make Shaker furniture "sometimes" use shortcuts in their plans - we do not use shortcuts. Tables that have three legs, eight foot tables and longer, are involved with what is called a double bridal joint in conjunction with the center leg, the cleat and the trestle. This complicated joint is then supported by two hand wrought iron braces. That is just one reason why the "how to" book writers do not get into such complicated joinery; the potential buyer would be intimidated and put the book back on the store shelf. Properly built, this Table is an extremely sturdy table and yet it can be simply dismantled for moving. This Shaker Table, the original ones, can and do exceed $60,000 in cost if you can find one. The table shown is 9' long, 29 1/2" height, 37" - 39" in width. Tables range from 5' to 10' in length. The Shakers really were wonderful, imaginative and true artisans, men and women alike. ![]() This shows the underneath of the table and the double bridal joint and two hand wrought "L" braces as found on the original Shaker Table. ![]() This picture shows the construction of the underside of the table as being exactly like the original design. |
