Bucket Bench - Origin Manheim, PA C. 1830-1840

Bucket Bench

Found in Eagles Magazine in 1991. The Bucket bench was auctioned off for $2,950.00; it was in its original red paint. Construction: Shelves are wedged mortise and tenoned into the sides. The gallery is hand dovetailed. Shown in my Grungy? mustard milk paint. Bench shown is 53" x 42" x 14". The same as the original. Other styles available. At the same auction, another Bucket bench in original paint sold for $5,500.00. A lot of money for five or six boards and some paint, but original pieces in original paint usually bring big prices. The Bucket bench can be used as a TV stand in various rooms in your Home (bottom shelf only), flower display, book shelves or exercise your imagination.

The Bucket bench was an important style in the evolution of the Country Cupboard. The first step towards the Country Cupboard was the simple Bucket Bench like the "Nell" bench in this website. Then they added sides and another shelf or two. Then the Bucket bench, similar to the one in my website, was made taller, backboards were added and a step back shelf or pie shelf was installed above the bottom doors. At this point you basically had a Pewter cupboard. Someone then thought of putting doors on the top half of the cupboard; these doors were either solid paneled or lited (glass panes). The lited doors, of course, would allow the cupboard owner to display perhaps blue and white china or some other colorful object(s).
