You Do the Best Work - You
use the Best Materials - We do!
We
are proud to offer you our quality line of Windsor Chairs and
Settees for your consideration. Our quality line of Windsor Chairs
and Settees is copied exactly from the originals after carefully
studying the design, construction and proportions of each style
of Windsor we offer.
Each
style of Windsor is a solidly built piece of furniture that you
will be proud to display in your Home.
Our
American-made Windsors are built with pride and dedication toward
offering our clients one of the best Windsor Chair(s) and/or
Settee(s) available in the market place today.
The
glue used to create each joint is a special glue used in the
chair-making industry by the better chair makers. Each spindle
that is used to form the back of one of our Windsor Chairs or
Settees is notched at the spindle's end that joins with the bow;
this joint is, of course, also glued. Then a hardwood wedge is,
with glue applied, driven into the spindle notch, thus creating
a much stronger, tighter joint. The originals were made in the
same manner. The bows and back posts were also attached to the
seat board by the same method.
Each
of the legs on our Windsor Chairs/Settees are joined to the seat
in the same manner as the spindles and bow are joined, an extremely
strong form of joinery. The original Windsors, that have survived,
are often as strong and tight as the day they were made some
225+ years ago. To further add to the authenticity of our quality
Windsors, we hand plane the bottom of each seat.
The
chairs typically consisted of a seat of white pine, with maple
for the legs and stretchers and either ash, hickory or oak for
the bendings.
Most
Windsor Chairs were painted for two main reasons. Primarily,
since the chairs were made using three different kinds of wood,
the grain and colors of the three woods did not match, so the
Windsor Chairs/Settees were painted to hide the very noticeable
contrast in the woods. Secondly, since the chairs were for the
most part used outside, the paint was used to protect the wood
from the elements.
The
Windsor Chair/Settee first appeared in America in about 1730.
Today, a Windsor Chair, in its original paint, can fetch a rather
handsome price.
WINDSORS - THEIR BEGINNING???
The
Windsor got its start in England under the reign of King George.
As the story goes, the King was out for a ride in the countryside,
when he came upon a humble home belonging to one of his subjects.
The poor farmer, recognizing the identity of this unexpected
guest, went back into his house and brought out his best chair
for the King. The King tried the chair and found it most comfortable.
Upon
returning to the castle, he summoned his royal cabinet makers
and instructed them to build a copy of the farmer's chair. After
the single chair was made, the King ordered that several more
Windsor Chairs be made for use in the castle.
Windsor
Chairs were actually the first patio furniture. King George placed
his Windsor Chairs about his gardens. Beyond this point, the
story gets a little sketchy.
OUR PURIST LINE OF
WINDSORS
HAND-PAINTED AND HAND-WORN
Our
Purist Line of Windsor Chairs and Settees offer the highest
level of authenticity. Of course, they are hand-painted and aged
with special attention paid to detail. My Grungy milk paint
is applied in a very realistic random manner so as not to appear
contrived. Each Windsor Chair, especially in a set, looks a little
different from the one next to it; this is how they should look.
The amount of wear and the placement of that wear differs somewhat
from chair to chair; the same difference can be seen on the originals
as well. The color of the exposed wood, where the wear has occurred,
has taken on a pleasing warm color, but not an even color, because
as appears on the originals, often the color(s) are mottled,
i.e. different shades of the same color; a very nice realistic
patina.
The
wear on the top of the bow is very pleasing because you are able
to see the wedges that are driven into the top of each back spindle
to strengthen the joint, a nice contrast of color shades. The
back spindles are properly worn due to many "years of use".
Our
hand-painted and hand-worn Windsors in my Grungy paint
with special wear and detailing are made with the Purist in mind.
My
Grungy paint, when aged, displays a very believable mottled
paint surface which, of course, adds further evidence that the
chair(s) and/or settee(s) are of the "18th Century period".
THE
PURIST WINDSOR APPEARS AS A VERY HANDSOME AND AUTHENTIC
PERIOD WINDSOR CHAIR AND/OR SETTEE.

OUR HAND PAINTED, WORN &
AGED WINDSORS (1)
I
hand paint, wear and age each chair & settee. This Windsor
line is available in various colors of milk paint - red, blue,
black, mustard, green, pumpkin and salmon. Each color is available
in smooth, worn and aged paint, a lightly grunged aged
and worn milk paint or one color over another color with proper
wear. Our aged and worn Windsors, chairs and settees alike, give
a satisfying appearance of an old Windsor that has endured 200+
years of use; A GOOD HONEST LOOK.
Our
hand-painted Windsor chairs and settees are each marked with
the Maker's name as well as the Painter's name.
A
well designed and decorated country home would not be complete
without excellent Windsors.
Windsors are
a timeless piece of furniture, having been with us, here in America,
for over 260 years.
